Dear WAPL Members,
The AAPL Board of Directors held its latest quarterly board meeting on December 15, 2019 at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas.
Below is a summary of the more relevant items discussed and/or voted on by the Board of Directors:
AAPL total membership is 14,937 as of December 2019. Total AAPL membership is trending slightly higher than prior years; however, student membership has declined by 9% from the prior year and more than 26% since 2016. Associate membership has also declined since 2016 and is up slightly (less than 1%) since 2018. Total membership may start declining by the start of the 2020-2021 fiscal year, based off feedback from surveys and general industry trends.
Technical Advisor Program
This committee is currently discussing ways to better market this program to our membership. The Advisory program connects advisors and participants to advance networking and career development for members. The Technical program facilitates an almost immediate connection between a member and a technical advisor who can assist in identifying possible solutions to land-related issues and questions. Technical advisors have land proficiencies in the following areas:
- Lease Negotiations & Acquisition
- Surface Access & ROW Negotiation & Acquisition
- Mineral Acquisition
- Unitization & Pooling
- Joint Operating Agreement Negotiations & Management
- Due Diligence for Purchases and Sales
- Federal, BIA and State Lands
If you have questions or would like to be involved, please contact me for more information.
NAPE Summit – metrics are running close with the same period last year. However, sponsorships are behind prior year at this point.
NAPE Season Pass – a new season pass that includes NAPE Summer and Summit has launched and guarantees the purchaser the early bird rate.
NAPE — the magazine for dealmakers was published in October and was mailed to all NAPE attendees free of charge. The magazine was produced without any cost to NAPE or its recipients due to our advertising revenue.
The January issue is at the printer and scheduled to mail in early January. Content Summary for January 2020 issue:
- CEO spotlight on George Solich who began his career as a landman
- Q&A with Matt Gallagher
- Big Data article by RS Energy
- Financing piece by Production Lending
- Public Perception of Energy and Environment by Jacki Pick Deason

In addition, NAPE Magazine won a Marcom Award for best new magazine.
Statement of Financial Position
As compared to September 30, 2018, total assets have increased from $37,201,489 to $38,460,078; a change of $1,258,589 or 3.4%. This is primarily due to distributions from NAPE Expo, LP and market activity related to the investment account. Total liabilities as compared to September 30, 2018 have increased from $2,083,045 to $2,290,725; a change of $207,680 or 10.0%. This is primarily due to the timing of accounts payable and accrued expenses as well as an increase in deferred revenue related to membership dues offset by decreases in deferred revenue for Educational Programs and Contract Center.
2018-2019 Financial Audits – the independent financial auditor’s field review in AAPL’s offices for NAPE and AAPL has been completed and delivered to AAPL. It was a clean audit, as expected.
The draft 2020-2021 budget was presented to the board of directors. Nothing surprising or out of the ordinary in the budget. Board will vote in March to approve the budget as drafted.
Upcoming Education Opportunities:
AAPL has tentatively scheduled a CPL review and exam in Wichita for March 25-28th. Please contact me for more information.
I want to make sure that everyone is aware of all opportunities there are for continuing education. Especially the free monthly webinars offered the third Thursday of the month on the AAPL website. In addition, there are a lot of education videos that can also be accessed through the AAPL website. Please visit the AAPL website for more information. https://www.landman.org/calendar‐and‐events/educationcalendar
AAPL Officer Nominations and Award Nominations are due January 10, 2020. WAPL to my knowledge has never won an award. Let’s try to me active in nominating our organization and or members, it provides great recognition to our organization and members. In addition, four award winners will also be awarded a $1000.00 donation to the charity of their choice. Those awards are for Landman of the Year, Pioneer Award, Lifetime Achievement and Local Association of the Year.
I’ve already submitted J. Fred Hambright for the Pioneer award, but let’s get involved. You can access the nomination forms here: https://www.landman.org/get-involved/nominate
If you would like more details about anything discussed herein, or about AAPL in general, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
